Facebook Evolving their Ad format

There’s been some significant rumblings over the past few days about the format of Facebooks ad unit changing. It sounds as though they are encouraging advertisers to use sponsored posts and sponsored page links rather than the photo + text based ads that you normally see on the right side of the screen. If you use the timeline for your personal page, then you likely have noticed fewer flyer ads already. To businesses who have an existing Facebook page, and actually engage with their fans, this would make for very little change, as they likely would prefer to have a social component to their ads anyway. In our business of course, we see a mix of organizations who are passionate social media mavens, as well as a good representation of businesses who have not fully embraced the social media landscape (gasp, did I really say that?) My suspicion is that this will change the metrics of paid campaigns going forward, though I’m not convinced that it will be detrimental to most campaigns from organizations that are using Facebook to actively engage with their fans. Having said that, even some of the social media savvy organizations still use Facebook ads in a traditional advertising manner at times. The challenge will be for those businesses that still have yet to embrace social media, so instead are running ads on Facebook knowing that their audience is there but are not quite ready to engage in a two way conversation yet.
There are lots of articles about this floating around right now, though I like this one that Zac found, as I find it explains the new format in a positive manner.

As you know, there are always rumors going around about the next big thing in Facebook, so there is a possibility that this will not actually happen. If Facebook does make the switch, then it would happen in May. So , if getting on Facebook is still on your to do list, then you have the month of March to procrastinate and the month of April to get with the times. You may want to replace that black & white tv as well.
